I think ICT is a great learning tool that gives teachers as well as students an adventurous learning. There are advantages and disadvantages to this tool, but in a same way require our constant monitoring it to keep it up-to-date. For example, I know a computer teacher who spent most of his time on the computer and only have a little bit time of rest. Each day he twitters up to 100 a day. I remember taking one of his workshop. He told me that if you have any question, just mail me or phone me at anytime, day or night. Wow! We are in the world of technology. We are not machine, but limited in many perspectives. I think we have to be in control or else if we are so addicted to it, it could control us instead. In reading these two articles, it confirms me that yes I do need to learn enough to be able to use it as a tool to better my teaching, but not to go to far that it could be a technoholic. --HW1: sr Rose
The first article begins with a synopsis, using a power point presentation, of the Leadership Characteristics and the Practical Application of Information and Communication Technology Leadership (ICT). It also enumerates the problems and difficulties that principals are faced with when they implement and employ ICT approaches in the school. The article also contains a principal's reflection on ICT leadership. He describes his image of ICT leadership using an analogy to mountain climbing.
This mountain climbing analogy is taken verbatum from the last page of a study, which had been carried out by Dianne L. Hee, who is a principal at County Central High School, in Vulcan, Canada. This leads to the second article, that had to be read. Ms. Yee's study is entitled "Images of School Principals' Information and Communication, Technology Leadership." The article is a qualitative study, that investigates the "lived experiences" of principals in ten schools, that use ICT frameworks in their respective elementary and middle schools. These were situated in Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
Ms. Yee investigates the application ICT by the principals by organizing the ICT experience into eight categories. They are, as noted in the first article's power point presentation, 1. Equitable providing. 2. Learning-focused Envisioning. 3. Adventurous Learning. 4. Protective Enabling. 5. Constant Monitoring. 6 Patient Teaching. 7. Entrepreneurial Networking and 8. Careful Challenging.
I found the study by Ms. Yee to be powerfully persuasive and excellently logically analytical in explaining the advatages, the necessity in the 21st. century to use the ICT framework to enhance teaching , leadership and most importantly learning. Most importantly it is student-centered, in which those who are open to change in learning by braking status quo limits, the teachers, administrators and staff are also learning and enriching themselves by challenging constantly their own borders and imaginary personal limitations.
Another element that I found excellent in Ms. Yee's article was her constant references and comparisons of the framework of ICT leadership qualities to those who practice transformational leadership, that stresses, as she writes, "charisma, inspiration, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation."
Also an excellent strong point in her study was the awareness by her, as well as the principals and teachers she interviewed, the opposition and roadblocks that many school systems, that still follow traditional learning and leadership methods, will place against those leaders, who are innovative and daring in applying the ICT framework in their schoools. She points out the fact that in trying to further the ICT agenda, the leadership "must have enough political sophistication to understand how much risk taking would be accepted and tolerated within the organization."
My conclusion, as I have previously stated, is that Ms. Yee's work is an important study, with an excellently and clearly written article about the necessity of change in the old traditions of educational leadership and the benefits of applying ICT methods to school systems. The educational community owes it to the students, in order to enrich their lives in the 21st century.
From the two materials , it shows that ICT becomes a tool to enhance learning and teaching in the new century. The articles focused on the ICT leadership of school principals. ICT Leadership Characteristics are as follows: 1.Equitable Providing: 2.Learning-focussed Envisioning: 3.Adventurous Learning: 4.Patient Teaching: 5.Protective Enabling: 6.Constant Monitoring: 7.Entrepreneurial Networking: 8.Careful Challenging : We must understand that ICT is only a tool to teach and learn. It’s not a course to teach or learn. All teachers have to learn to use ICT in their classrooms. So we as a teacher or a principal in the future, should learn ICT Conscientiously.
